In the 2010s, MEDA's Sarasota Network Hub leveraged connections in Havana, Cuba, to lead educational tours in Cuba.
These trips invited Canadians and Americans to learn more about the U.S. trade embargo in Cuba through direct interactions with Cuban people. Tours visited with doctors, students, artists, farmers, and entrepreneurs in Cuba's unique socialist society.
Through these experiences, members of our tours gained a great understanding of the economic strains on the people of the island. And we had opportunities to support Cuban artists, vendors, and businesses by purchasing their goods and paying for their services.
I had the opportunity to travel on this tour in 2018 in order to produce this video and promote further tours to Cuba. Unfortunately, this proved to be the final Encounter Cuba trip for some time before new U.S. laws restricted travel to the nation.
In June of 2023, Goessel selected my logo design to serve as the new city logo moving forward! After spending my formative childhood years in the community, it means a lot to know I'll have a place in its future as well.
